What Is Psychosexual Therapy? Guide for Kent Clients

A Confidential, Talking-Based Approach for Sexual Difficulties in Kent

Psychosexual therapy, also known as sex therapy, sex counselling, or psychosexual counselling, is a specialist, evidence-based form of talking therapy for sexual difficulties and intimacy concerns. The field was pioneered in the 1960s and 70s by researchers William Masters and Virginia Johnson, whose work introduced techniques such as sensate focus and shaped much of how sex therapy is practised today.

An important point of clarity: psychosexual therapy is a talking therapy. In line with the COSRT (College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists) code of ethics, there is no physical examination and no physical touch between therapist and client at any point. If a physical cause is suspected, you’ll be supported to speak with your GP alongside the therapeutic work, not instead of it.

For clients across Kent, including Maidstone, Kings Hill, West Malling, and Tunbridge Wells, psychosexual therapy offers a private, professional space to talk about difficulties that can feel too embarrassing or isolating to raise anywhere else. It’s also distinct from “sex addiction” treatment models, which typically follow a 12-step, abstinence-based approach where compulsive sexual behaviour is the concern, this practice takes a non-shaming, exploratory approach instead.
